The relevant standard in my area is ASSE 1016, which covers automatic compensating valves for individual showers. It applies to both types, so don’t let a supplier tell you standards don’t matter.
Temperature Stability: The Difference You Can Feel
If you’ve ever been in a shower when someone flushes a toilet, you know what bad temperature stability looks like. A pressure-balancing valve handles the pressure side, but not the temperature side. If the incoming hot water temperature drops because a recirculation loop is set up wrong, the pressure-balanced valve can’t fix it.
In my experience, a thermostatic valve is way better at holding a set temperature. That’s not a marketing claim; that’s what the extra hardware is designed to do.
In April 2024, I got a call from a hotel owner who had a valve leaking into the lobby. The room was booked for a wedding weekend. Normal lead time for the part was three days. We found a GROHE valve in stock at a supply house, paid a bit extra in rush shipping, and had it installed by noon the next day. Cost Over Time vs. Sticker Price
Let’s talk about real cost.
Sticker price: pressure-balancing valve wins. No question. But the calculation changes when you add up the callbacks, the lost operating hours, and the wall damage.
We had a supplier send us five “commercial grade” valves at a great unit price. I said “commercial grade” meaning performance; they heard “as cheap as possible while still shipping something with a handle.” We opened the boxes and found cartridges that didn’t have the same travel or flow characteristics as the sample we spec’d. The job got delayed by two days. Never again.
In our job logs, the callback rate on basic pressure-balancing valves is noticeably higher than on thermostatic valves in buildings with fluctuating water temperatures. In single-family homes with a good pressure-reducing valve and a steady supply, the difference is small. That’s why I don’t say “always use the most expensive.” I say match the valve to the building.
Quick Note on the GROHE Bidet Faucet
People sometimes assume that if a GROHE shower mixing valve is good, a GROHE bidet faucet is the same conversation. It’s not. A bidet faucet has different flow requirements, different valve types, and often different code requirements. But the buying rule is the same: verify the rough-in dimensions and the listing before you order.
If you’re spec’ing a GROHE bidet faucet for a project, don’t just look at the photo. Check the supply size, the mounting hole spacing, and whether it includes a temperature-limiting function if local code requires it. The faucet might look similar to a regular lavatory faucet, but it isn’t the same.
Which One Should You Spec?
If you’re working on a hotel, a rental building, or any project where the user will complain to the front desk, choose a GROHE shower mixing valve or an equivalent thermostatic valve. The extra cost is insurance against the worst kind of callback: one that starts with a cold shower at 7 a.m.
If you’re doing a small residential bathroom with stable pressure and a strict budget, a pressure-balancing valve isn’t a sin. I’ve installed them in houses where the owner just needs a working shower. But don’t pretend it’s the same specification. It’s not.
And if a supplier says “same thing, half the price,” ask for two things: the ASSE 1016 listing and the exact rough-in dimensions. If they can’t send both, move on.
One rule from my job log: if a valve can’t be serviced without cutting tile, it’s not a cheap valve. It’s a loan that will be repaid with labor.
